WIRE’s volunteer program has played a critical role in supporting individuals and communities for over 40 years.

Our volunteers use an intersectional feminist, strength-based and person-centred direct service model to provide respectful, non-judgmental support to women and gender diverse people.

We offer four streams of volunteering at WIRE:

Each month we send out a newsletter with WIRE's latest updates on our services, advocacy work, events, training and community workshops. Our Professional newsletter is curated for community services professionals, and our Community newsletter is for the broader Victorian community.

1.Volunteer Support Worker Training

The Volunteer Support Worker training program will support you to: 

 

  • Build and strengthen your active listening skills 
  • Apply critical thinking in support conversations  
  • Work collaboratively as part of a supportive team environment 
  • Be confident to provide individual support independently 
  • Build reflective practice skills    

 

Is Volunteering with WIRE Right for You?

Volunteering with WIRE may be suitable if you: 

 

  • Have or wanting to build strong active listening skills  
  • Are empathetic and compassionate    
  • Have a passion for social justice    
  • Can demonstrate reliability and commitment 
  • Have a minimum availability of 4 hours per fortnight for volunteering over a 12month period (once training is completed)  
  • Can perform the role on site at Level 5, 255 Bourke Street, Melbourne 
  • Have basic computer skills and access to a reliable computer and internet for training  
  • Can provide a current National Police Check 

(Note: Having a police record does not automatically exclude you from volunteering. You are welcome to discuss this during the application process.) 

  • Hold or are willing to obtain a valid Working with Children Check 

(Free for WIRE volunteers) 

Selection Process

If you are a woman or gender diverse person aged 21 years or over and interested in completing the training, the selection process involves: 

  1. Completing an Expression of Interest (EOI) Form 
  2. Receiving a Volunteer Information Pack   
  3. Completing a formal application form – if your written application is successful, you will be invited to attend a group meeting.  
  4. Attending a group interview     

 

Training Cost

  • $180 — Concession / Student  
  • $300 — Full price  

2. Professional Volunteers

WIRE provides volunteering opportunities to professionals who may come from a range of backgrounds. Qualifications, expertise and experience might relate to the following clinic and seminar options that WIRE currently offer.

3. Students and Interns

WIRE encourages students and interns from marginalised communities to apply for the placement and internship.
