Understanding Tax Time in Australia: Tax Returns, Deductions & Your Rights

WIRE Information Advocate Yihan Li interviews lawyer Julia Bell about Australia's tax system and Tax Time.

Australia’s tax system can be confusing at the best of times, and even more so during Tax Time. Tax Time is the period following the end of the financial year when Australians gather their income statements, receipts, and are reminded by the Australian Taxation Office to lodge their tax return.

But what does that mean? For those who are new to the system, whether starting their first job, experiencing a change in family circumstances, or recently arriving in Australia, understanding tax obligations and knowing where to begin can feel overwhelming.

At WIRE, we believe that correctly lodging your tax return is an important step towards long-term economic and financial security. To help understand Australia’s Tax System, WIRE’s Information Advocate, Yihan Li, reached out to bankruptcy litigation lawyer, Julia Bell, to explain some basic tax concepts.

If you would like to learn more about Australia’s Tax System and how to lodge your tax return, WIRE will also be hosting a free, online ‘Tax Talks’ workshop. To learn more or register for the session, visit https://events.humanitix.com/tax-talks-free-online-workshop
