NATIONAL SORRY DAY

May 26th is National Sorry Day.

WIRE supports and acknowledges what this day means for First National People, and that it is a National Day of Healing. This date marks the anniversary of the tabling of the landmark Bringing them Home report in 1997.

It is a day of recognising the Stolen Generation and the intergeneration suffering that this has caused First Nations People. It is also about recognising the strength and resilience of First Nations People in the face of everything they have endured in the past and continue to endure today.

This day is also about the non-Indigenous population of Australia taking time to reflect on their place in this country. Apologising for the traumas that have been afflicted to Indigenous Peoples is the first step towards healing, but there is so much work that still needs to be done.

At WIRE, this day served as a reminder to reflect on our individual and collective opportunities as allies.
