A Free Seminar for Women

As part of 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based violence and Victoria Against Violence, WIRE presents another FREE Seminar for Women.

Family Violence + Men’s Alcohol Abuse: The Real Story For Women
Monday 27 November
1.30pm to 2.30pm
WIRE 372 Spencer Street
West Melbourne 3003

Alcohol may not cause family violence, but it definitely makes things worse.

Alcohol misuse is a known risk factor for family violence, resulting in more serious injuries for women survivors.

Presenter: Ingrid Wilson, Research Fellow at Latrobe University and Chair of WIRE.

Ingrid will present the lived experience of family violence + alcohol through the voices of women interviewed for her PhD.
Ingrid will:

  • Reveal the dynamics of drinking and violence and the strategies women use to keep safe when an alcohol- affected partner is violent
  • Explore the complexity of women’s relationships with a violent partner who drinks and how a partner’s alcohol use can become another tool of control
  • Discuss ways to support women whose experience of family violence is interconnected with a partner’s problem with alcohol.
