My Husbands Having An Affair
CALLER:
Hello, I am so upset. I have been married for 30 years and have discovered my husband has been having an affair for a long time with another woman. This is not the first time he has done this but this is the last straw for me. I want to leave him and move inter-state. This will be hard for me to do because I will have to move away from my adult children but I want a new life.
WIRE:
It sounds as if you have struggled for a long time with this. Sometimes deep hurt brings its own healing and strength. If you feel you really must leave your home, make sure you get some legal advice on your rights and entitlements before you do.
To find out more about this you can call the Women's Legal Service Victoria on 03 9642 0343 or 1800 133 302 Monday, 10 am to 1 pm; Tuesday, 6.30 pm to 8.30 pm; Wednesday, 2 pm to 5 pm; Thursday, 6.30 pm to 8.30 pm and Friday, 10 am to 1 pm. You have rights in relation to a fair share of the marital property and even to your husband's superannuation. If you have little income of your own, you may be able to obtain low-cost or free legal assistance.Whichever State you move to, there is a Women.s Information Service like WIRE that can put you in touch with groups that will help you find housing, work, income support, education or friendship. This could be the start of a wonderful new life for you. It will be lonely at times but it might give you a chance to take up new hobbies, a new job, learn a new skill and have some adventures. We all travel a lot in Australia and your children will probably enjoy having somewhere to visit. And of course we are all only a phone call away.
