Volunteering at WIRE
Our volunteer team is a critical part of the WIRE telephone support service. At any one time, over 60 women donate their time, skills and experience to run our telephone support service; this represents well over $150,000 to $200,000 worth of work each year.
By training and working with volunteers, we
- Stay in touch with issues affecting the community of women we serve
- Remain approachable and accessible to women
- Recognise and celebrate volunteering as an important pathway to paid work
Our women volunteers say working at WIRE is an immensely satisfying, stimulating and enriching experience. Many also find that their experience with us leads them to employment and sought-after places in higher education courses.
The excellence of the WIRE volunteering experience was formally recognized on 5 October 2007 when WIRE won $10,000 as Victorian Volunteer Organisation of the Year in the small to medium category of the National Australia Bank Volunteer Awards. This is a tribute to our support staff and all the wonderful women who volunteer for WIRE. Twenty-three volunteers attended the ASIST suicide training course paid for by the $10,000.

Other ways you can volunteer
In addition to our telephone support workers, administrative volunteers and student placements also work regularly on projects, in the Women’s Information Centre and around the office. You can
- Run our weekly computer classes in the Information Centre
- Help with office administration
- Conduct telephone surveys
- Update databases
- Lend us your professional expertise in areas such as communication, photography or IT (on a project or ongoing basis)
