Do you work with & support women affected by family violence?
Do you want to work with women to help them better understand their relationship with money?
Do you want to help empower women to build their financial capabilities?

WIRE delivered highly successful Purse Project workshops (free financial capacity-building workshops) to women survivors of family violence across Victoria in 2015/16.

Insights gained from these Purse Project workshops will be integrated into WIRE’s new practitioner workshops Purse Project for Community Practitioners: Train the Trainer workshops. These FREE 3-hour workshops are open to all community workers who want to support women in building their financial capabilities after family violence.

Research shows that the majority of women (80%– 90%) seeking support from family violence services have experienced financial abuse. Programs such as the Purse Project help women to take the first step in building stronger financial futures after family violence. This Purse Project program was recently recognised in the Royal Commission into Family Violence.

Workshop participants will

  • Learn how to deliver the Purse Project financial capability workshop content to their service users either individually or in groups
  • Gain a stronger understanding of women’s relationship to money and the impacts of financial abuse
  • Learn practical strategies to build women’s financial capability – so that women will have the knowledge, skills, and self-efficacy to make money decisions that best suit their life circumstances
  • Increase their knowledge and skills to support women
  • Receive comprehensive training resources

About WIRE’s Purse Project workshops for women affected by family violence

In WIRE’s Purse Project workshops run across Victoria and in Melbourne in 2015/16, women participants were assisted to explore their individual relationship with money, based on their experiences and how they had developed their financial management skills. This understanding not only gave women insights into their spending habits, it also helped them to identify their own strengths.

Women were provided with useful tools to move forward, including education about protecting their assets in future; they also had the opportunity to set financial goals and receive ongoing support to achieve them.

What Purse Project participants said

“I realized that my spending has always been excessive. My latest unfettered spree was set off just before Christmas by a family member’s actions. I think I use spending as an emotional relief. Instead of expressing my anger and starting an ongoing fight, I try not to get angry, but just indulge instead. I’m now feeling like an addict, coming down after a binge!”

“I have set up a direct debit from my everyday account into a separate savings account. I found this bank (bank name withheld) a good choice based on interest rate and the lack of access – I can no longer make impulse transfers the way I used to when my account was linked to the everyday account. I also save using the budget set up with the pocket book app.”
